Register a Custom Nameserver Host Through InterServer
Published
Registering a nameserver host associates a name such as ns1.example.com with its approved server address at the registrar for example.com. This supports required host/glue data; it does not install an authoritative service or change the delegation of every domain using it.
Confirm the domain’s actual registrar
Use InterServer’s domain controls only if InterServer manages that registration and the required host operation is available for its extension/account. For a domain registered elsewhere, use that registrar’s procedure. A domain can use InterServer hosting without its registration being managed here.
Prepare the nameserver first
Confirm the real authoritative listener address and intended hostname, its corresponding A/AAAA data and its hosted zones. Keep the registered host address consistent with authoritative DNS. Plan independent redundancy rather than assuming two names on one server provide two failure domains.
Register through the authenticated domain controls
- Sign in to the InterServer portal and select the parent domain’s registration service, not just a web-hosting subscription.
- Find the nameserver host-registration control where offered. Earlier portal screens used Nameservers > Register Nameserver; this review does not establish that every current account has the same layout.
- Enter the intended host name and actual supported address, carefully following the form’s full-name versus label format.
- Review and submit the registration, then inspect the resulting host/address. Complete any required account confirmation through the verified portal.
- If the control or registry requirement is unclear, open an authenticated support ticket before changing delegation or deleting an existing host.
Registration, DNS hosting and delegation remain separate
Verify required parent host/glue data and direct authoritative answers before delegating domains. DNS Manager zone creation is a separate task; a cdns hostname list is not a substitute for registering your own child hosts. See finding the DNS design assigned to your service.
When changing an existing nameserver address, inventory dependent domains and coordinate parent data and authoritative address records. Cached old answers can persist; do not repeatedly delete/recreate hosts to force an update. Preserve recovery values and any DNSSEC transition plan.
