Optimizing MetaTrader on Your InterServer VPS

Running MetaTrader 4 or 5 (MT4/MT5) on a Virtual Private Server (VPS) is the gold standard for traders who need 24/7 uptime, low latency, and the ability to run Expert Advisors (EAs) without leaving a home computer running. However, because trading software can be resource-intensive, getting the best performance requires the right setup.

Choosing the Right VPS Plan

While you can technically run MetaTrader on smaller instances, stability is key when real money is on the line. For a smooth, lag-free experience—especially if you are running multiple charts or complex EAs—we recommend a 4-slice VPS or higher.

A 4-slice configuration provides the necessary CPU power and RAM to ensure that your platform doesn’t “freeze” during high-volatility market events (like NFP or central bank interest rate announcements) when price data is flooding in rapidly.

Tips for Optimizing MetaTrader Performance

Once your VPS is live, you can further optimize the software to ensure it uses as few resources as possible, leaving more “room” for your trades to execute instantly.

1. Reduce “Max Bars” in Charts

By default, MetaTrader saves a massive amount of historical price data. This eats up RAM. Unless you are backtesting, you don’t need 100,000 bars visible.

  • Go to Tools > Options > Charts.
  • Lower “Max bars in history” and “Max bars in chart” to around 5,000.

2. Disable Unnecessary Features

Every visual extra takes a tiny bit of processing power.

  • Disable News: Go to Tools > Options > Server and uncheck “Enable News.”
  • Close Unused Charts: If you aren’t trading a pair, close the chart. Each open window consumes memory.
  • Hide Symbols: In the “Market Watch” window, right-click and select “Hide All.” Then, only manually add back the symbols you actually trade.

3. Limit Visual Elements

If you are using a VPS, you are likely not staring at the screen all day.

  • Remove unnecessary indicators from your charts.
  • Avoid using “Objects” (like many hand-drawn lines or shapes) if they aren’t critical to your EA.

4. Restart Periodically

Even the best-coded software can experience “memory leaks” over weeks of continuous operation. We recommend scheduling a quick restart of your VPS or at least the MetaTrader application once a week (during the weekend when markets are closed) to clear the cache and keep things snappy.

Why Latency Matters

By hosting your MetaTrader instance on an InterServer VPS, you are placing your platform closer to the major financial data centers. This reduces “slippage”—the difference between the price you see and the price you actually get—giving you a competitive edge in every trade.

Ready to scale your trading? Check your current resource usage in the VPS control panel to see if it’s time to upgrade to a 4-slice plan for maximum stability.
