Manage DirectAdmin Mailboxes and Forwarders Carefully
Published
DirectAdmin provides mailbox and forwarding controls for domains assigned to your account. A successful panel operation does not prove that public MX records route mail to this server or that a remote provider accepts outgoing mail.
Create and verify a mailbox
- Sign in through your verified HTTPS DirectAdmin service, choose the intended domain and open E-Mail Manager > E-Mail Accounts. Older skins use different grouping labels.
- Choose Create Account, enter the intended local address, generate a strong unique password and review the offered quota and sending limits.
- Save, inspect the resulting address and use the actual provider-supplied connection details for Webmail or a client. Do not assume a guessed hostname or unlimited storage.
- Use harmless authorized tests for both incoming and outgoing mail, then check the actual destination and any delivery errors.
Change access or remove an account
The mailbox’s modify controls can change its password and other permitted properties. Update authorized clients after a password change and keep recovery material private. Suspension and unsuspension controls, where offered, must be interpreted using the installed server’s help: do not assume one switch affects every mail path identically.
For deletion, preserve and verify needed messages and account settings first. Select only the intended mailbox and confirm the delete action. Do not treat deletion as a harmless way to reset a password or repair delivery. Check applications and forwarding rules that depend on the address. The automatically created system account has special rules and cannot be treated as an ordinary deletable mailbox.
Create or retire a forwarder separately
Open E-Mail Manager > Forwarders and choose the create action. Confirm the source domain/local part and enter the complete authorized destination. Save and inspect the exact pair. A forwarder is not itself a mailbox backup and can disclose all routed messages to its destination.
Use the specific forwarder’s modify action to change a destination where supported. To remove it, select that rule and confirm deletion, leaving unrelated rules intact. Verify whether local mailbox copies remain and prevent loops that route back to the source. Changing a rule does not recall delivered messages.
Diagnose the exact failure
Check credentials, quota, restrictions, authoritative MX records and delivery logs rather than disabling encryption or broadly loosening access. A certificate-name warning needs the correct verified service hostname, not automatic acceptance. Use a support ticket with redacted timestamps and errors; do not send passwords or private mailbox exports.
