Understanding the DirectAdmin “Legacy Downgrade” Error

If you are managing a server with DirectAdmin and suddenly find your control panel inaccessible, you may be facing a licensing conflict. This typically happens when a server that previously used a “Pro Pack” license attempts to switch back to a “Legacy” license.

The Error Message

You will likely see the following error in your system logs or when attempting to update your license:

transient license check failure: downgrade to legacy code-base is not supported, reinstall server or use non-legacy

Why is this happening?

DirectAdmin tracks the history of your server’s installation. If your server has ever run a Pro Pack license in the past, the software automatically updates its internal files to a modern codebase.

DirectAdmin does not permit a “downgrade” from this Pro Pack codebase back to a Legacy license. Once the system has been upgraded to support modern features, it cannot revert to the older Legacy version without a complete system wipe.

How This Affects Your Server

This is not just a warning; it stops your services from running correctly:

  • Control Panel Failure: DirectAdmin will stop functioning, meaning you cannot manage users, emails, or DNS.
  • Web Server Issues: If you use OpenLiteSpeed, the service will likely fail to start, which will take your websites offline.

Recommended Solutions

As an InterServer customer, you have two primary ways to resolve this issue:

  1. Purchase a Modern License (Easiest Fix): To get back online immediately without losing data, you should purchase a non-legacy (Pro Pack) license. You can do this through my.interserver.net or directly from DirectAdmin.
  2. Reinstall the Server: If you must use a Legacy license, you will need to back up all your data, format the server, and perform a fresh installation of both the operating system and DirectAdmin.
