How long does an expired VPS or webhosting account stay available for re-activation
Published
If you have ever wondered what happens if you miss a payment or how long your data stays safe after your due date, this guide covers the lifecycle of an InterServer VPS and webhosting renewal renewal.
The Renewal Cycle: A Concrete Example
To understand the timeline, let’s look at a standard scenario.
Imagine you purchased a new VPS or webhosting plan on the 1st of the month. InterServer typically aligns its billing so that your service renews on the 1st of the following month.
- Invoice Date: The 1st of the month.
- Due Date: The day the invoice is generated (the 1st).
InterServer maintains a static billing cycle and your vps will renew on the same day. However you can reach out to support if you want to change the billing date.
Key Takeaway: If you pay your invoice late—for example, on the 10th—your renewal date does not change. It remains the 1st of the month. You are paying for the cycle that has already begun, not starting a new 30-day window from the payment date.
The 14-Day Grace Period
Life happens, and sometimes invoices get missed. InterServer provides a 14-day grace period before the service expires. Here is the communication schedule you can expect during this time:
- Day 1 (Invoice Day): You receive a single invoice notification via email.
- Day 1 – 7: No additional reminders, and the system remains active.
- Day 8 – 14: If the invoice remains unpaid after 7 days, you will begin receiving daily reminders until day 14 with a final notice and expiration.
If you reactivate or pay for the VPS or webhosting plan at any point during this 14-day window, the vps will have remained online the entire time with in the grace period.
What Happens After Expiration for a webhosting account?
Once the grace period ends and the webhosting plan officially expires and is eligible for removal from the network. There are no further reminders after the late notifications and final expiration email. For webhosting plans our aim is to keep the account for at least 60 days. Accounts with jetbackup after removal will move to a orphaned account and generally be available for restore for 30 – 60 more day. However users are encouraged to rach out if they believe they will re-activate the plan later to get a downloadable backup. Suspended accounts are skipped from further backups, or restores on a server migration or full server restore. Please note a webhosting plan differs from a VPS with root access.
What Happens After Expiration for a vps?
Once the grace period ends and the VPS officially expires the VPS is eligible for removal from the network. There are no further reminders after the late notifications and final expiration email.
Data Retention and Hardware Stock
InterServer strives to keep VPS data for as long as possible, but this is not guaranteed. Retention depends heavily on two factors:
- Current Stock: If the specific node or hardware your VPS resides on is in high demand, the system may reclaim your space for a new customer.
- Supply Chain: Global hardware shortages can pressure us to recycle unused resources faster than usual.
Additional time
If your VPS has expired and you are unable to renew it, you are in the “danger zone.”
- If you need more time we highly recommend reaching out to support at least 3 days before expiration to ask for additional time.
- Our billing department will review requests for more time on a case by case basis.
Proactive Steps: Backups and Support
If you anticipate a payment delay, do not wait for the expiration date. You have two main options to protect your data:
1. Communicate
Once again if you believe you will need additional time to pay, open a ticket with support before the expiration date. Support staff may be able to note your account or offer a temporary extension depending on your history and the current hardware status.
2. Export Your Data
You can secure your data independently of your subscription status by using the InterServer portal.
- Log in to my.interserver.net.
- Navigate to your VPS management page.
- Generate a backup in my.interserver.net which will store on our remote cloudstorage.
- Download this backup to your local machine.
Having a local backup ensures that even if your VPS is terminated and the data is wiped from the server, you can rebuild your environment later.
3. Can I renew my expired vps still?
You may be able to renew your vps in my.interserver.net as long as:
- There is an open invoice as once removed the open invoice will also be removed and
- The power status is not listed as deleted
Summary
- Due Date: The day the invoice generates (e.g., the 1st).
- Grace Period: 14 days total.
- Reminders: One invoice on Day 1; daily reminders start after Day 7.
- Late Payment: Does not move your next renewal date.
- Termination:Once expired a vps may be reclaimed; strictly dependent on hardware availability, demand and current supply chain issues.
