Enable HTTPS in OpenCart: Version, URLs and Checkout Checks
Published
Enable HTTPS in OpenCart only after the web server presents a trusted certificate for the store’s actual hostname. An application SSL setting does not obtain a certificate, secure every external resource or prove that all HTTP requests redirect.
Prepare a recoverable change
Back up the store database and configuration files. Note the exact OpenCart version, storefront/admin URLs, additional stores and any proxy/CDN. Test HTTPS directly before changing URLs so an invalid certificate does not lock you out of the administrator interface.
Check the version-specific settings
OpenCart’s older official SSL guide describes System > Settings, editing the intended store, and enabling Use SSL on the Server tab. Use that control only if it exists in your installed release. Newer versions or customized stores can use different URL/configuration handling; do not add old constants or force a screenshot’s menu path onto a different version.
Check the release’s storefront and administrator base-URL configuration as well as every additional store. Keep a subdirectory path where applicable. Change the scheme without accidentally changing the hostname, installation directory or unrelated filesystem paths.
Verify the shopping workflow
- Test home, categories, products, images and administrator login on HTTPS.
- Check login/session continuity, basket and a payment provider’s approved test flow without making an unintended real purchase.
- Review payment callbacks, feeds, extensions and embedded HTTP resources.
- Test HTTP redirects separately and look for loops behind a proxy.
Use logs and browser diagnostics to investigate failures, not disabled certificate verification. Confirm certificate renewal and monitoring. HTTPS is a transport requirement, not a promise of rankings or complete payment compliance.
