Reset a DirectAdmin Password Without Exposing Installation Secrets

Published

DirectAdmin

Reset a DirectAdmin password through an authorized account-management route. An installation log may contain an obsolete bootstrap secret; printing it is not a reliable way to recover the current password and can expose credentials.

If you can sign in

Use the account’s password control in your installed skin, provide the current password when required, and set a long unique replacement. Check which related login services share that system account before changing it. Save the new secret privately and test a separate session before closing your working one.

If you cannot sign in

Use the enabled login recovery route or contact the hosting administrator through authenticated support. Account owners without authorized system administration access should not attempt to read server installation files or reset other users.

DirectAdmin’s service troubleshooting documentation describes using the operating system’s interactive passwd utility as root to reset the intended local account. Confirm the exact account and dependencies first; do not assume it is named admin. A system-password change may affect SSH or other services using that account.

Do not retrieve a password from logs

The old command that printed installation-log password lines and its sample credential have been withdrawn. An initial secret may have changed, and exposing it creates a separate security risk. If historical logs contain real credentials, have the authorized administrator protect them and rotate any secret still in use under the site’s incident/recovery policy.

If the new password still fails

Check the actual username, account status, time/cookie issues, 2FA and recorded authentication error. Do not disable the firewall, clear broad access lists or remove second-factor protection as a routine password fix. Supply non-secret error details to support.
