OpenLiteSpeed PageSpeed: Maintenance Warning and Alternatives
Published
PageSpeed server modules rewrite web resources such as JavaScript, CSS, and images. They are different from PageSpeed Insights, the website performance testing service. An Apache module and an OpenLiteSpeed module are not interchangeable binaries.
For OpenLiteSpeed, do not follow this page’s former installation recipe. OpenLiteSpeed’s documentation no longer recommends its PageSpeed module because it has not been maintained and may cause stability problems. The previous article mixed a cPanel heading with an old OpenLiteSpeed source-build procedure.
If PageSpeed is already enabled
First identify the web server, module package, version, and configuration owner. Save a copy of the working configuration and test any change on staging. A control-panel-managed Apache server should not be treated as a standalone OpenLiteSpeed installation.
Check which transformations are active and whether the application, CDN, or another optimization plugin already performs the same work. Stacking resource rewriting can make failures difficult to diagnose. Watch for missing scripts, stale CSS, broken forms, and differences between authenticated and anonymous pages.
To retire an existing integration, plan the configuration change and rollback with the server administrator. Disable it using the mechanism appropriate to that installation, validate the web-server configuration, and check representative pages before removing old packages or caches. There is no safe universal uninstall command for all of these stacks.
Improve performance without assuming a module is the answer
- Measure an actual slow page and distinguish network time, server response time, and browser rendering work.
- Use appropriately sized images and avoid sending unnecessarily large originals to phones.
- Review unused third-party scripts before adding another optimization layer.
- Configure caching for the application and server you actually run. Exclude private or personalized responses.
- Re-test logins, shopping carts, forms, and mobile navigation after each change.
For an InterServer-managed service, include the affected URL and a reproducible performance problem in a support ticket. Do not install a module copied from an unrelated web-server tutorial.
