Boosting Your Inbox Success: Understanding Return Path Feedback Loops

If you are running an email server or a VPS with InterServer, you may have seen an InterServer abuse report from a Feedback Loop (FBL). This is an important tool in identifying complaints on email that can be used to keep your IPs clean.

In short, a Feedback Loop is a system that notifies us whenever a recipient marks your email as “Spam.” Select email providers are part of validity FBLs. Generally speaking InterServer will subscribe to all available providers.

The “Universal” Feedback Loop at InterServer

While there are many different providers, Validity operates the Official Feedback Loop Service used by many major email organizations. In the past, individual users had to sign up for this themselves, and today, Validity has moved toward being a paid service.

The good news? You don’t need to worry about the cost or the setup.

  • Included by Default: All InterServer IP addresses are already included in our monitoring systems.
  • Automatic Forwarding: We handle the registration and technical heavy lifting. When a complaint is filed against your IP, we forward that data to you.

How This Helps Your Email Delivery

Maintaining a clean sending reputation is the only way to ensure your emails get delivered. Here is how the FBL helps you stay in good standing:

  • Identify Unwanted Mail: If a customer on your mailing list hits “Spam,” the FBL tells you exactly who it was. You can then remove them from your list immediately, preventing further complaints.
  • Spot Abuse Early: If your VPS is compromised and starts sending out unauthorized spam, the FBL acts as an early warning system. You’ll see the spike in complaints and can stop the abuse before your IP gets blacklisted.
  • Improve Trust: Major mail providers see that you (and InterServer) are responsive to complaints. This builds “sender reputation,” which makes it more likely your legitimate emails will be delivered.

What Should You Do?

When you receive a complaint notification from us, don’t ignore it. Use that data to ensure mailing lists are good and check your server logs for any suspicious activity. By staying on top of these reports, you ensure that your IP address remains trusted by the world’s biggest email providers.

Included on all InterServer owned ips. If you bring your own IPs however this service is not included.
