Resolve FTP Connection Limits Without Disconnecting Unrelated Users

Published

WHMcPanelFTP

A 421/too-many-connections response means a server limit or related policy may have been reached. The actual limit is configuration-dependent, not universally eight. Investigate session ownership and client concurrency before increasing a server-wide allowance.

Reduce unnecessary client concurrency

Review the client’s simultaneous-transfer and connection settings. Close your own unused sessions deliberately and avoid repeated retries that create more load. Multiple legitimate users behind one NAT address may share a per-IP limit; that is different from one user opening many sessions.

Inspect cPanel FTP Connections

Where enabled, open Files > FTP Connections through verified HTTPS cPanel. Review the user, source and activity for the exact connection before disconnecting it. A disconnect can interrupt an upload or leave a partial file. Do not terminate arbitrary sessions simply to free a slot.

Review WHM limits only when justified

An authorized administrator can inspect Service Configuration > FTP Server Configuration. Distinguish the total Maximum Connections from Maximum Connections Per IP Address. Assess capacity, shared-address users, abuse controls and expected concurrency before a scoped change; do not disable limits or allow root-password access as a shortcut.

Preserve the prior settings, apply through the installed daemon’s supported process and verify the result. Higher connection allowances can increase resource use and do not repair network, TLS, credential or data-channel failures.

Check the real outcome

Retry an authorized encrypted connection with controlled concurrency and inspect matching server/client evidence. Check affected partial transfers before resuming or overwriting files. Use a support ticket with timestamps and redacted errors if account users cannot review the relevant service state.
