Create an Art Portfolio Website with WordPress
Published
A useful art portfolio needs clear project pages, fast-loading images, and a reliable way to contact the artist. WordPress can provide that without requiring a paid theme or a large collection of plugins. Start with a small, maintainable site and add a shop only if you actually need online checkout.
1. Prepare the hosting account
Connect your domain to the intended hosting account and confirm that HTTPS works before entering administrator credentials. For an InterServer account, start at the customer portal and open the control panel for the service you purchased. Control panels and available installers vary by plan.
On a cPanel account with Softaculous, use our WordPress installation guide. Choose the correct domain and installation directory, use a unique administrator password, and record the recovery email. Do not install over an existing site without a verified backup.
2. Choose a theme for your work
Preview a maintained theme using your own images and sample text. Free themes are not inherently incompatible or unreliable, and a paid license does not guarantee quality. Compare update history, accessibility, mobile navigation, support, and the features you need.
A block theme with the WordPress gallery and image blocks may be enough. Check whether project content remains usable after switching themes; a theme that stores the portfolio in proprietary shortcodes can make a later redesign harder.
3. Organize a small portfolio
- Home: explain what you do and show a concise selection of work.
- Projects: give each substantial project its own page with a title, images, date, medium, and useful context.
- About: describe your practice and relevant experience accurately.
- Contact: provide a working contact method and realistic expectations for replies.
For client work, obtain permission before publishing private material. Explain your own contribution to a collaborative project rather than implying you created everything shown.
4. Prepare images for the web
Keep original files in a separate backup. Upload appropriately sized display copies instead of camera originals when full resolution is unnecessary. Use descriptive filenames and alternative text that explains the artwork or its role on the page, not repeated marketing keywords.
Check crops, captions, color appearance, and orientation on a phone. A thumbnail grid should lead to useful project detail rather than forcing visitors to download every large image at once. Avoid hiding essential project information inside image text.
5. Add only necessary plugins
Start with the features WordPress and your theme already provide. If you need advanced galleries, evaluate a maintained gallery plugin on staging. Test keyboard controls, captions, mobile layouts, and how it handles existing media before importing your whole collection.
A contact form needs spam controls and a tested delivery path. Send a real test submission and confirm it arrives; seeing a success message in the browser is not proof that an email reached you. Do not publish private mailbox credentials in a page or form setting visible to visitors.
6. Check the site before sharing it
- Browse the site while signed out, on both a phone and a desktop.
- Test menus, project links, image enlargement, and contact forms.
- Confirm HTTPS works without mixed-content warnings.
- Create a recoverable backup of the database and files, and know how to restore it.
- Remove unused themes and plugins, keep the active software updated, and restrict administrator access.
For the current editor controls, use the WordPress documentation. If an installer, certificate, or hosting connection fails, include the domain and exact error in an InterServer support ticket without sharing passwords.
