Changing a hostname for a server in my.interserver.net
Published
Understanding Server Identifiers on my.interserver.net
When you order a dedicated server, the hostname is chosen during the initial setup to serve as the server’s basic identification. Once your server is provisioned, three key details are established:
* Server Hostname
* Order ID
* Asset ID
What Can Change? The Order ID and Asset ID are permanent fixtures associated with your hardware; they generally do not change unless a physical replacement is required.
The Hostname, however, can be changed, but it requires a specific process. To update the hostname visible in the my.interserver.net portal, you must request the change via a support ticket.
Changing your hostname locally on the server (e.g., using the Linux hostname command or editing /etc/hosts) will not automatically update the my.interserver.net portal. The portal has no way of “seeing” local changes. Having a hostname different than what is in my.interserver.net will not affect the service.
