Change cPanel Nameserver Software to PowerDNS Carefully

Published

WHMDNS

WHM manages the authoritative DNS software for a cPanel server. Selecting PowerDNS is an administrator-level service change, not a way to guarantee faster page loading or automatically enable every DNSSEC requirement. Use the panel’s supported integration, not a standalone installer layered over it.

Review the current design

Record the installed release and OS, active nameserver, authoritative zones, local resolver settings, DNSSEC state and cluster peers. Preserve private configuration/zone backups and an independently verified recovery route. PowerDNS Authoritative does not replace a recursive resolver your server or clients still depend on.

WHM currently documents PowerDNS, BIND where supported by the OS, and Disabled. The availability and default are release-dependent. Do not assume every upstream SQL backend or a separate Poweradmin console belongs in cPanel’s integration. Old packet-cache interval claims are not a configuration promise for your installed service.

Change the local service deliberately

  1. Use verified HTTPS WHM with authorized privileges.
  2. Open Service Configuration > Nameserver Selection.
  3. Review the available PowerDNS option and the installed release’s warnings before saving. Schedule maintenance and keep administrative recovery access.
  4. Inspect completion/status and actual authoritative answers. A selected option is not proof all zones, keys and peers are correct.

Review cluster and DNSSEC compatibility

When DNSSEC-signed domains exist in a cPanel DNS cluster, cPanel requires all cluster members to use PowerDNS. The DNS Cluster status column can offer an Upgrade link for a member, but this is not a substitute for that member’s preparation and verification. Do not blindly upgrade every peer at once.

Use the separate cluster lifecycle guide for token, role, synchronization and removal tasks. Nameserver selection, record replication and registrar delegation are distinct controls. Signing needs correct key/DS relationships; neither a software change nor DNSSEC guarantees query privacy.

Verify before declaring success

Compare record data and responses at each intended authoritative endpoint, verify legitimate TCP/UDP query paths and check delegated nameserver and DNSSEC behavior. Confirm the server’s own recursive lookups still work. Investigate mismatches before retiring the previous recovery option; do not disable validation or reset zones to hide an error.
