Legacy TLS on cPanel: Diagnose Clients Without Global Downgrades
Published
Do not treat a system-wide LEGACY crypto policy as a supported way to restore TLS 1.0/1.1 access on a cPanel mail server. These protocols are deprecated, and changing the operating-system policy cannot add a protocol that the application or its libraries no longer implement.
Why the old workaround was withdrawn
The previous instructions combined a global crypto-policy downgrade, an OpenSSL provider configuration and a WHM protocol change without verifying that combination on cPanel 132/Dovecot 2.4. That was not evidence of a working solution. OpenSSL versions and configuration differ between operating-system releases, and loading a legacy provider is not equivalent to enabling an old TLS protocol.
A system-wide policy can affect services beyond mail, so weakening it for one client is an unnecessarily broad default. This article no longer provides commands to switch the production server to LEGACY or to rewrite its global OpenSSL configuration.
Confirm the actual failure first
- Record the mail hostname, protocol, port, client/version and exact error. A certificate-name mismatch, authentication failure and protocol negotiation failure are different problems.
- Confirm the client’s supported TLS versions and update its software, operating system or firmware when possible. Use TLS 1.2 or later rather than disabling encryption.
- Have the server administrator check the installed cPanel, Dovecot and cryptographic-library versions and relevant logs. Do not infer available protocols from a copied WHM label alone.
- Review the current supported Mailserver Configuration for that version. cPanel’s version-132 documentation states support for TLS 1.2 and later, even though its settings description also lists historical values.
Handle a client that cannot be upgraded
Prefer replacing the client or moving that workflow to maintained software. If an organization must accommodate a legacy device temporarily, its administrator should conduct a separate risk review covering isolation, exposed credentials, network access, monitoring and a retirement deadline. This is not a recommendation to weaken the shared hosting server or a promise that InterServer supports obsolete protocols.
For an InterServer-hosted account, open a ticket with the non-secret diagnostic details. Do not send a password or ask another user to bypass certificate validation. A mail-server restart or crypto-policy change can affect other users and should not be attempted as an unverified trial.
