How Do I Find the Path to the date Command?
Published
The location of date can vary by operating system and installation. In the shell where your script will run, check:
command -v date
type -a date
date
command -v shows what the shell will run from its current PATH; type -a can show multiple matches. On many Linux systems the external GNU command is under /usr/bin, while /bin may be a link or a different layout. Minimal containers may not include it.
Use date by name in a script when its environment sets a suitable PATH. If a program requires an absolute path, check that exact runtime environment instead of assuming /bin/date exists. See the GNU date documentation.
