Understanding Your InterServer IP Location: What You Need to Know

Published

IP Addressvps

When you sign up for a web hosting plan, VPS, or dedicated server with InterServer, you’re getting a piece of high-powered hardware located in one of our data centers. However, you might notice something specific when you look up your server’s IP address or try to log into certain third-party websites.

Here is a quick breakdown of how our IP locations work and why some websites might treat your connection differently than your home internet.

Where is my IP located?

All InterServer IP addresses are US-owned and registered. Because our corporate headquarters is based in New Jersey, most IP geolocation databases will list New Jersey as the primary location for your IP. Even if your physical server is in a different data center, the registration often points back to our home state.

Datacenter IPs vs. Residential IPs

It is important to understand that there is a difference between the internet connection you have at home and the one you have on your server:

  • Residential IPs: These are issued by companies like Comcast, AT&T, or Verizon to home users.
  • Datacenter IPs: These are issued to providers like InterServer to power websites, apps, and remote environments.

Because InterServer is a professional hosting provider and not a residential Internet Service Provider (ISP), your server IP is flagged in global databases as a Datacenter/Cloud IP.

Why am I getting flagged as a “Proxy” or “VPN”?

If you are using a Remote Desktop (RDP) or a proxy service on your InterServer machine to log into external websites (like streaming services, banking portals, or gaming sites), you might run into some hurdles.

Some websites are very strict about security. When they see a login attempt from a datacenter IP rather than a home IP, they may automatically flag the connection as a VPN or Proxy. In some cases, the site might trigger extra security Captchas, or it might block the connection entirely.

How to Handle IP Blocks

If you find that a specific service is blocking your InterServer IP, here is the best path forward:

  1. Check the Site’s Terms: Always ensure your usage conforms to the specific website’s Terms of Service. If a site is designed to block non-residential users, they are usually doing so to prevent automated bots or regional bypasses.
  2. Contact the Site Operator: InterServer cannot “force” another website to accept our IP range. You will need to reach out to the administrator of the site you are trying to access. Ask them why the IP is being flagged and if they can whitelist your specific address for your legitimate business or personal use.

We pride ourselves on providing clean, reliable IP space for our customers to grow their online presence. If you have technical questions about your specific assignment, our support team is available 24/7 to help.
