Restore a cPanel Account in WHM Without Accidental Data Loss

Published

WHMBackups

Restore a full cPanel account through WHM only when you have the required administrative permission and a trusted account archive. A full-account restore is not a way to merge a backup into an unrelated live account. Identify the intended destination and protect any existing data before starting.

Migration service scope: InterServer’s complimentary migration service is limited to cPanel-to-cPanel and DirectAdmin-to-DirectAdmin transfers on web hosting plans. VPS and dedicated-server migrations are not offered. This guide explains an administrator’s restore workflow, not a promise that InterServer will migrate your server. For an eligible hosting transfer, use the migration support process.

Prepare the archive and destination

  • Check restore access: the provider can control reseller access to WHM’s restore interface. Ordinary cPanel access does not grant full-account restore permission. If the interface is unavailable, ask your provider about the approved restore route.
  • Use a complete account archive: a supported full backup or cpmove archive is different from a Home Directory download or a standalone SQL export. Do not assume that renaming an ordinary ZIP file makes it a valid account archive.
  • Keep backups private: use authenticated, encrypted delivery. Do not place an account archive in public_html or create an anonymous download URL. Mail and database contents can be sensitive.
  • Check capacity and compatibility: cPanel requires at least twice the archive size in available disk space for extraction. Also assess the restored account’s storage needs, software requirements and resource limits.
  • Resolve conflicts first: check the account username, domains and destination data. If this is an intentional recovery over an existing account, take a separate verified backup of that destination and agree what data will be replaced.

Choose the WHM restore method

In WHM, open Transfers > Transfer or Restore a cPanel Account. Older releases used labels such as Restore a Full Backup/cpmove File. Select the appropriate local-archive or upload option and identify the correct account archive. The current interface also offers a remote cPanel account transfer; when an administrator has root privileges on both servers, cPanel recommends the WHM Transfer Tool.

Do not enable “Overwrite if the cPanel user already exists” simply because the option is available. It is optional and replaces an account with the same username. Enable it only for an intentional, authorized replacement after protecting the current destination and confirming the rollback plan. It is not a safe merge operation.

Review the A-record replacement choices before restoring. Consider whether custom records still need to point elsewhere. Save the current DNS values separately; a restore setting does not establish that the website, external DNS or mail routing is correct.

Restricted Restore performs extra checks but is experimental and is not an effective security boundary, according to cPanel. Do not treat it as proof that an unknown or compromised archive is safe. If it skips components or reports problems, investigate the report rather than blindly disabling the checks and rerunning.

Monitor the restore and inspect its result

After reviewing the selections, start the restore and monitor the progress interface. Closing a browser window does not prove that the job stopped or finished. Use Transfers > Review Transfers and Restores to locate the session and inspect warnings or failures. Do not submit a second restore over the same account while the first session’s status is uncertain.

Test before changing DNS or removing backups

  • Check that the intended account, domains, files and databases exist. Inspect reported omissions rather than accepting a success banner as a complete application test.
  • Preview with the real hostname and appropriate HTTPS configuration. Test login, database-backed pages, uploads and necessary scheduled jobs without triggering real customer emails or payments from a test copy.
  • Verify mailboxes, folders, representative messages, aliases and mail routing separately. Preserve third-party mail records if mail is not moving.
  • Reconfigure account two-factor authentication on the destination; this restore workflow does not transfer the account’s 2FA configuration.
  • Reconcile writes made after the backup, agree a cutover window and retain the source or other rollback material until the restored service is accepted.
