Move a Weebly Site to WordPress: Content Transfer and Rebuild Plan

Published

MigrationWordPress

Moving a Weebly site to self-hosted WordPress at InterServer usually involves importing usable content and rebuilding the design and platform features. It is not a full hosting-account restore, and an RSS feed does not prove that every page, image or store item has transferred.

This is self-managed work, outside InterServer’s complimentary matching-panel web hosting migration service. Builder conversions, cross-panel moves and VPS/dedicated migrations are not included.

Inventory before selecting an import method

List the actual source pages, blog posts, comments, media, forms and store features. Save authorized copies and record important URLs. Determine what your specific Weebly/Square product can export; do not assume an archive, feed or tool for one product works on another.

The previous guide recommended an unverified HTTP feed-generator service. That recommendation is withdrawn. Do not disable HTTPS, publish private content or send credentials to an unknown converter to obtain an export.

Choose a bounded content-transfer route

  • Manual rebuild: copy content you own into WordPress pages/posts, upload the original media and recreate the layout. This is often the clearest route for a small site.
  • WXR/XML conversion: use a trusted, currently supported tool only after checking its data handling and output scope. Test the result in a separate WordPress installation before relying on it.
  • RSS: if the source supplies a usable feed and your importer supports its format, treat it as a subset of blog content. Check the oldest entries and item count; feeds are not complete site backups.

Use the importer matching the actual file format, not simply any file with an XML extension. Rebuild Weebly-specific forms, menus, themes and commerce behavior separately. Do not assume a WordPress.com-specific import service is built into self-hosted WordPress.

Map URLs and test before cutover

Compare the destination content inventory with the source, including local media rather than hotlinks. Map actual old URLs to their new equivalents; the old hardcoded /1/post permalink structure is not a universal Weebly URL scheme. Configure redirects where you control the old hostname and verify representative links.

Test forms, navigation and any commerce workflow in a safe environment. Keep source access and private exports until accepted. Moving DNS or domain registration does not transfer builder content or external email automatically.
