Move Zoho Mail to cPanel: IMAP, Exports and Verification
Published
Moving mail from Zoho to a cPanel mailbox is an external-provider message migration, not a matching-panel account restore. Plan it as a self-managed transfer: InterServer’s complimentary migration service is limited to matching cPanel or DirectAdmin web hosting transfers, not Zoho-to-cPanel moves or VPS/dedicated-server migrations.
Check source access before changing MX records
Check whether your Zoho plan and administrator settings permit IMAP. Use the server settings displayed for your account and data center, rather than assuming one hostname fits every account. Enable IMAP where available and follow Zoho’s authentication requirements, including an application-specific password when applicable.
Create the destination mailbox in cPanel with adequate quota and verify its actual IMAP/SMTP settings. Keep Zoho available until messages and delivery are verified. Copying email does not automatically recreate contacts, calendars, filters, aliases, passwords or organization settings.
Option 1: Copy accessible messages over IMAP
When both servers allow authenticated IMAP, use an approved tool with encrypted connections and certificate/hostname verification. Follow the imapsync guide for a scoped test, private credentials and non-destructive copying. Include required Sent, Archive and custom folders; do not assume only Inbox matters.
If Zoho denies IMAP for your account, do not keep retrying with weaker authentication. Check the plan or organization policy and choose a supported export route instead.
Option 2: Export and import compatible message files
Zoho’s Admin Console provides email-account export controls for authorized administrators. Select the required users, period and folder scope deliberately. Its current guide describes ZIP and, for eligible paid accounts, PST exports; it also provides choices for including Spam and Trash. Download the completed exports before cancelling accounts or their download availability expires.
A Zoho ZIP or PST file is not automatically a Roundcube import file. Roundcube’s documented message importer accepts EML and Mbox. Extract a ZIP privately and inspect its contents; if it contains EML messages, test a representative import into the intended folder. PST needs a trusted conversion or other supported migration route, not a renamed extension.
Check the installed Roundcube version, permitted upload size and message format. Preserve folder mapping deliberately rather than uploading every message into Inbox. Do not expose archives to an online converter without an approved data-handling agreement.
Verify and reconcile delivery
Compare required folders and representative messages, dates and attachments. Investigate missing, oversized or rejected items. Change MX and related mail records only when the destination is ready, then test receiving and sending and reconcile mail delivered to Zoho during the DNS transition.
Keep the source, exports and rollback settings until the owner confirms the result. A successful import notification alone does not establish that every mailbox, setting or later message migrated.
