Review Legacy CentOS Symlink Protection Before Applying Old Patches
Published
The old CentOS 6/7 symlink-patch installation recipe is historical and should not be used as a current server-hardening checklist. CentOS Linux 7 reached upstream end of life on June 30, 2024; CentOS 6 is also an obsolete upstream platform. A narrow symlink patch is not a replacement for a maintained operating system and a complete security-update plan.
What symlink attacks actually depend on
A symbolic link stores a path, not remote access privileges. Linking to the server root does not automatically grant root access or bypass every file permission. Exposure depends on which process follows the link, the target’s access controls and the surrounding application/kernel protections. Cross-account hosting isolation needs more than a statement that FTP users have limited directories.
Why the old commands are withdrawn
The former procedure piped a downloaded installer directly into a privileged shell, assumed a free patch entitlement and assigned a fixed web-server group ID. Those assumptions are not a safe fit for arbitrary current servers. Patchset names, supported kernels, licensing and the identity being protected must be verified against the actual installed product.
cPanel’s separate KernelCare procedure documents an extra patchset, whereas the older article used free. Do not substitute a patch type or apply sysctl values blindly. An unsupported knob can fail, and a successful command alone does not prove the intended cross-account access is blocked.
A safer review plan
- Inventory the actual operating system, kernel, support arrangement and hosting stack. Plan a supported replacement for an obsolete platform.
- Review the exact vendor protection and supported kernel matrix, plus the real web/PHP execution identities. Do not guess numeric groups such as 48 or 99.
- Check existing filesystem isolation, per-account permissions and kernel protections without disabling them. Linux protected_symlinks addresses specific sticky-directory conditions; it is not equivalent to every hosting-vendor isolation feature.
- Have an authorized administrator assess compatibility and recovery, then test the selected control in an isolated environment with synthetic accounts before a controlled production change.
This is self-managed server planning, not a promise of an InterServer VPS or dedicated-server migration service. Contact authenticated support for the scope available to your actual plan.
