Hyper-V Windows VPS: Password Security & Reset Policies

Published

When you provision a Windows VPS (Hyper-V) with InterServer, you are granted full Administrator access. This gives you total control over the operating environment, but it also places the responsibility of access management in your hands.

Because we prioritize your security and privacy, we do not store your password once the server is provisioned.

Admin Access & Privacy

Once your Hyper-V VPS is set up and you have logged in for the first time, the password exists only with you.

  • We do not keep a record of your current password.
  • We do not have a hidden “backdoor” into your server.

Since you have full Administrator privileges, you are free to change your password at any time. However, please be aware that once you change the password from the initial default, our technicians have absolutely no way of knowing what the new password is.

Granting Access for Support Requests

There may be times when you need a technician to log into your server to investigate an issue or perform maintenance. Because we do not track your password changes:

Important: If a support request requires a technician to log in, you must explicitly provide the Administrator password in the ticket. A secure password section is included that will encrypt the password.

For security purposes, we highly recommend setting a temporary password for the duration of the support ticket. Once the issue is resolved, you should change the password again to secure your server.

Pro-Tip: Create an Emergency Local User

RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) is robust, but network issues or firewall misconfigurations can sometimes lock you out of standard remote access. We strongly recommend adding a second local administrator user to your Windows VPS immediately after setup.

Why? If your main Administrator account gets locked out or RDP fails you can provide the local logins to support to help recover rdp. This provides a “fail-safe” way to regain access without needing a server reset or paid intervention.

Lost Passwords & Reset Fees

If you lose your Administrator password and do not have a backup user created, resetting the password is not a simple task. It cannot be done instantly via a software switch.

The Reset Process

  1. System Offline: The VPS must be taken offline completely.
  2. Manual Intervention: A technician must manually mount your virtual disk drive to an external rescue environment to attempt a password reset.
  3. Duration: This process typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes.

Service Fee

Because this requires significant manual labor and dedicated technician time, there is a $30 service fee for password resets.

Summary Checklist

  • Save your password in a secure password manager immediately.
  • Create a secondary Admin user for emergency console access.
  • Provide credentials if you open a support ticket that requires login.
  • Avoid the $30 fee by keeping your credentials safe!
Account services are unavailable until the production backend is configured.
