Review Pure-FTPd Listing Limits Without Replacing Whole Configurations

Published

FTP

A truncated FTP directory listing does not necessarily mean files were deleted. cPanel documents a default Pure-FTPd listing limit of 10,000 entries per directory, but inspect the installed service and configuration before changing anything. ProFTPD, client filters and filesystem permissions can have different behavior.

Distinguish display limits from storage limits

Compare the exact directory and hidden-file/filter settings through an authorized alternative view. Do not treat a limited FTP listing as a complete inventory, backup verification or proof of missing data. Hosting disk, inode, filesystem and resource limits still apply; there is no unlimited file-count promise.

Use the supported local override

For an administrator-managed cPanel Pure-FTPd service, current documentation uses /var/cpanel/conf/pureftpd/local rather than replacing the main generated configuration. Preserve existing settings and add or edit only the intended unique key. The vendor’s illustrative entry is:

LimitRecursion: 15000 8

The first value concerns returned entries and the second recursion depth. The example is not a required value for every server; assess workload and choose deliberate bounded settings. Do not create duplicate keys, overwrite unrelated access restrictions or infer that increasing display scope creates additional storage.

Apply and verify with administrative care

Follow the installed cPanel procedure to regenerate the selected daemon’s configuration. Its documented setupftpserver operation is privileged and can affect service availability; preserve rollback and inspect generated settings before declaring success. A restart alone does not make an unsupported generated-file edit persistent.

The former download command overwrote configuration from an arbitrary HTTP repository and used inconsistent paths. Do not download a whole replacement configuration as a listing-limit fix. Never disable encryption, confinement or quotas to reveal more files.

Recheck the same authorized directory listing and independently verify inventory when completeness matters. Consider organizing large application directories through the application’s supported process rather than moving live files blindly.
