Centos6/7 Migrations for cPanel

Time to Upgrade: Migrating Your EOL CentOS Server to AlmaLinux

If you are currently running CentOS 6 or 7, you’ve likely seen the warnings: these systems have officially reached their “End of Life” (EOL). In the server world, EOL means the developers have stopped releasing security patches. Running an EOL system is like leaving your front door unlocked—it’s only a matter of time before someone notices.

Critical Security Alert:

Recent major vulnerabilities, such as the CVE-2026-41940 authentication bypass, highlight why staying on older systems is dangerous. Even if your data appears safe right now, the lack of security updates on older OS versions makes your server a sitting duck. We strongly recommend migrating to a modern, patched environment immediately.

To keep your data safe and your websites fast, it is time to move to AlmaLinux 9. Here is how we can get you moved over to a fresh InterServer VPS or Dedicated system without the stress.

Why the Switch?

Security is the biggest reason. Beyond that, modern software like the latest versions of cPanel and LiteSpeed require a modern operating system to function correctly. By moving now, you ensure your server is supported for years to come.

  • AlmaLinux 9 EOL: Supported until 2032
  • AlmaLinux 10 EOL: Supported until 2035

The Migration Game Plan

1. Set Up Your New Server

The first step is to order a new VPS or Dedicated server with AlmaLinux 9. Don’t worry about paying for two servers at once—reach out to our support team. We can set up a 30-day migration window so you have plenty of time to move your data before canceling the old system.

2. Handle the cPanel Licensing

You don’t need to buy a second cPanel license for the move. You can contact [email protected] and request a 15-day migration license. This keeps both your old and new servers active while you transfer accounts.

3. Transfer Your Accounts

cPanel includes a powerful “Transfer Tool” that does most of the heavy lifting. It can migrate all your accounts, databases, and emails from the old server to the new one automatically. You can follow the official steps here: cPanel Transfer Tool Guide.

Important Note on IP Addresses:

If you are moving between VPS instances (KVM or OpenVZ), your IP address will change. You will need to update your DNS records once the move is finished. However, if you are moving to a Dedicated Server, we can often move your existing IP to the new machine at the very end of the process.

Matching Your PHP Versions

One of the biggest hurdles in a migration is making sure your websites still work on the new software. A new cPanel install on AlmaLinux 9 supports PHP 7.4 as the minimum. Through Multi-PHP, you can choose between 7.2, 7.4, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 and higher per domain.

However, keep in mind that anything under PHP 8.0 is technically EOL. If your website absolutely requires an older version (like PHP 5.6 or 7.0), a standard setup won’t work. For these cases, we highly recommend CloudLinux OS.

CloudLinux is available on KVM VPS or Dedicated servers and includes “Hardened PHP.” This allows you to run older versions safely by patching security holes that the original developers have ignored. It’s the best way to keep an older site running securely on a new server.

Need a Hand?

Migrations can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. If you have questions about which plan to pick or how to start the transfer tool, open a ticket with InterServer support. We’ve done thousands of these moves and are happy to help you get onto a more secure platform.

Account services are unavailable until the production backend is configured.
