Back Up an SMF Forum Database with Structure, Data and Files

Published

SMF

Back up both the SMF database and the files needed to recover the forum. A schema-only export does not contain posts or members, and compression changes storage format rather than adding missing data.

Check the installed release

The earlier screenshots show a historical Forum Maintenance > Database > Backup database workflow. SMF administration has changed across releases; use that path only if your installation actually provides it. If no backup control exists, use the hosting database-management or administrator-approved backup route instead of installing an unverified add-on or downgrading SMF.

Select structure and data deliberately

  1. Confirm the forum database, backend and table prefix without exposing its credentials.
  2. For a full database recovery point, capture the required table definitions and their data, including extension tables. Read option labels rather than relying on checkbox positions from an old screenshot.
  3. Choose supported compression if useful, generate the export and retrieve it through a protected connection.
  4. Record the SMF release, time and scope. Keep a separate backup of Settings.php and required attachments, avatars, themes, packages and custom code.

A compressed file opening correctly does not prove the database is complete. On a busy forum, arrange a consistent capture strategy; the appropriate method depends on the backend and allowed administrative access.

Prove recovery before needing it

Restore a trusted backup into an isolated, compatible environment and verify representative members, boards, posts and attachments. Keep outbound mail and scheduled tasks contained. Test role restrictions as well as administrator access; a visible homepage alone is not a useful recovery test.

Before replacing production data, preserve the current state and account for posts or registrations since the backup. Do not treat an old database as an upgrade/downgrade mechanism between incompatible releases. Backup retention and timing should reflect the forum’s actual needs; this article does not define an InterServer service-wide policy.
