Back Up and Restore phpBB Database and Required Files

Published

BackupsphpBB

A phpBB database backup preserves forum records, but attachments, custom files, images and configuration also matter to complete recovery. Match the backup to your phpBB version, database backend and extensions; phpBB is not limited to one universal MySQL setup.

Create a database backup in the ACP

  1. Open the trusted Administration Control Panel with appropriate permissions and find Maintenance > Database > Backup.
  2. Choose the full database scope required for recovery, an available supported compression format and all relevant forum/extension tables.
  3. Submit the job and inspect its completion. Where the version stores the file locally, retrieve the completed backup through the supported private access route; a server-only copy is not an off-site backup.
  4. Record its date, forum version, database details and scope alongside the corresponding file backup.

phpBB’s official guide describes the store directory for ACP-generated backups. Keep this location protected; do not disable access controls or publish a direct database download link. Preserve uploads, attachments, avatars, custom styles, extensions and configuration according to the actual installation, not just a generic directory checklist.

Restore a compatible backup carefully

Back up the current state and plan for posts or registrations newer than the recovery point. In an isolated test environment, place a trusted compatible backup where the installed ACP expects it, open Maintenance > Database > Restore, inspect the selected file and confirm only after verifying the destination.

If no file is listed, check supported format, location, permissions and release compatibility rather than assuming every SQL dump can be uploaded to that screen. Large databases may require an administrator-managed export/import outside browser time limits; never put passwords into public commands or scripts.

Check the result

Verify users, representative posts, permissions, extensions and actual attachment downloads. Test with outbound mail and scheduled integrations contained. A restoration success message does not prove that missing files or a prior compromise have been resolved.
